Elaine Grummitt - Breed Notes 18/10/26

Excellent news that the RKC has reversed its decision to have three judges for our breed. Also, I have for several years now been campaigning for an earlier removal time. It seems that the RKC is listening to exhibitors. From next year, we have an earlier removal time of 3pm. This may not have a great impact on Labrador exhibitors, but some of the breeds with fewer entries can often be over and done with well before lunchtime. Credit where it’s due……well done the the RKC for taking note on both issues.

At SWKA, Wendy Bebb-Sutton judged both sexes. DCC, BOB & BV adding to his considerable tally, was the Hodge family’s Sh Ch, Ir Sh Ch, Lux Ch, Int Ch Naiken Elite Envoy. RDCC went to Sussie Wiles with Richbourne Lion King. BCC was Rich Stafford’s Sh Ch Farnfield Partridge. Miss Bishop’s The Girl Is Fun From Linjor took RBCC, and BP was Erica Jayes  and Ed Casey’s Lapema Crystal Lake At Sandylands.

The same day, at Lab Club Of Wales, Arwyn Ellis was our dog judge, and Amanda Stewart took on the bitches. DCC & BOB was Erica and Ed’s Sh Ch Berlan Get Up And Go At Sandylands. RDCC went to Chris and Claire Mill’s Rodstar Rocke Zero Bully At Lembas. I hope that was a welcome boost for Chris, he’s really been through the mill recently with his health. BCC, and gaining her crown on the day, was Lorraine Tooth’s (Sh Ch) Mattand Halloween Moon By Ludalor. RBCC was a first such award for Gunn’s Exelby Elizabeth At Weachyburn. Well done, you must be thrilled. BPD was Linda Harvey-Majors Linjor Mr Jammy Dodger. BPB & BP, rounding off a good day for Erica and Ed was Lapema Crystal Lake At Sandylands, taking her second BP award of the day.

News from Ireland that my own and Anne Dempsey’s ‘Bailey’ now has his International Veteran Title, (subject to FCI confirmation*). He is now Sh Ch, GB Sh Ch, Rom Sh Ch, Int Sh Ch Dromtacker Made To Order (IKC), CW’19, Jun Ch, Vet Ch, Int Vet Ch* JD. As he has gained every title that it’s possible for him to gain, we have taken the decision that he will be graciously retired from the show ring, with the possible exception of a few club shows. He was bred by Anne, by Sh Ch, Ir Sh Ch Carpenny Made A Million out of Ir Sh Ch Carpenny Verona. It’s been quite a ride. He is not only a joy in the show ring, he also has the sweetest nature. He will enjoy his retirement with Anne, and his legacy will live on through his progeny in Ireland, here in the UK, and in several other countries.

Excellent to hear that Jessica Elvidge is on the mend. Jessica has really been through the mill recently. She was diagnosed with discitis osteomyelitis, which is a very serious and rare bone infection. It initially affected her spine. She had surgery, and then received the unwelcome news that the infection had spread to another area. She has received a prolonged course of extreme antibiotics, which thank goodness, seem to be working. Jessica is extremely grateful for all the messages of  support she has received from her friends in the Labrador community. We hope to see you back in the ring very soon Jessica.

Three Ridings are running a Breed Appreciation Day on Sunday 24th of January at Thorpe Willoughby Village Hall. This is an essential step for anyone on the judging ladder. The full day includes a Multiple-Choice exam and a group mentoring session. In order to receive the necessary Certificate Of Attendance of the Mentoring Session, you must pass the Multiple Choice Exam on the day, or provide proof that you have already passed it. The full day, including mid-morning refreshments and lunch, is £40.00. Morning only, including mid morning refreshments but no lunch, is £25.00. The speaker is David Craig, and if you’ve never attended one of David’s seminars, I can promise you it’s well worth going even if you have already passed the exams and you just want to go as an observer, you will surely expand your knowledge and understanding of labradors.  Numbers for the seminar and exam are limited, so reserve your place soon by applying via email to Anne Johnson at secretary.threeridings@gmail.com

Finally, as all our breed news is now online, it would be wonderful if there is anyone out there in the field trial and working world who could write a weekly column similar to this one. With news of results, upcoming events, news of what’s happening in the shooting and trials world etc. If there is anyone who would like to take it on, it doesn’t even need to be weekly, it could be bi-weekly or monthly,  get in touch with Matt Bordacs and he will give you all the necessary guidance. It would be good for the working side of our breed to have a voice.
