Judges Introduction:

I grew up with a Labrador, a lovely yellow girl named Cornlands Cortina from Peggy Rae (Cornlands) – she was given that name as when she was born, the winter Olympics were being held in Cortina (and of course they have recently returned there) - and I have been passionate about the breed ever since. In 1988 I obtained a Cornlands girl of my own – just as a pet - but decided to give showing a try when one of the trainers at my local dog club commented on ‘what a showy little girl’ she was. So off I went to my first show, and was instantly hooked. Her kennel name was Cornlands Callisto, pet name Cally – from which I eventually derived my affix, Callyswood, in her memory. I owned several more girls from the Cornlands kennel after that, becoming good friends along the way with Peggy, who was a wonderful mentor.

My first judging appointment was in 2007 and although nervous, I thoroughly enjoyed it. In 2014 I produced my first home-bred litter from my Cornlands Lady Flora (who had previously won a Reserve CC), and was lucky enough to make up a show champion from that litter, Sh Ch Callyswood Caitlin. I can still remember the thrill of being handed my first CC – it was an amazing moment that I will never forget. The second and third ones were also pretty exciting! Caitlin is still with me and although nearly 12 and retired from the show ring, is very much enjoying life. She still moves beautifully and I will never tire of watching her on the move. I also have her daughter and granddaughter who give me a great deal of pleasure, in and out of the show ring. I am currently ‘dabbling’ with the youngest one in both obedience and agility, and we are having great fun in both – she constantly demonstrates that lovely typical Labrador ‘willingness to please’ – even when her handler (me) gets it wrong, which is quite often! But the show ring will always be my first love.

The dog world is a big part of my life. I am on the committees of both the Yellow Labrador Club and the East Anglian LRC and always enjoy being a part of a team running a show. It can be challenging at times of course but it is always fun. Judging is both a pleasure and a privilege, and I am very much looking forward to my appointment with Midland Counties LRC.
